Katskhi Pillar

Katskhi Pillar - This is a natural limestone monolith located in the village of Katskhi, near the city of Chiatura. It is about 40 meters (130 feet) high and overlooks the small river valley of Katskhura, a right-hand tributary of the Kvirila River. A rock with visible ruins of a church (IX-X centuries), on the upper surface of c. 150 m2. It revered by the locals as the Pillar of Life and the symbol of the True Cross and surrounded by legends. Until 1944 it was not investigated. It was impossible to climb to Katskhi's column without climbing equipment. Religious activities were restored in the 1990s. Since 2007, funding of the Cultural Heritage Protection and Rescue Fund has started rehabilitation works. It is prohibited to climb to Katskhi Pillar. In exceptional cases, only the men can climb on the column with a blessing of local monks.
