Rabati  Castle

Rabati  Castle, is a historical castle in the town of Akhaltsikhe, South Georgia, in the historical district of "Rabat". It is located on the bank of the river Potskhovi. It was the most important defensive structure of the region. The fortress had three fences and underground tunnels. The history of the castle begins in the IX century. Originally established as Lomis Castle. In the XIII-XIV centuries, the fortress became the residence of the Akhaltsikhe owners - Djakeli. It was restored and expanded. Since that time there is a toponym "Akhaltsikhe"(renewed). In the 16th century, the fortress passed under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. In the 19th century, after the Adrianople treaties, the Ottomans gave up the fortress. Most of the surviving buildings date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The fortress and the adjacent buildings were carefully rebuilt and renovated in 2011-2012. Rabat Castle serves as a popular destination of tourism.
