Leave the roads, take the trailes...

Omalo

Omalo - is located between the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range and the Pirikita Ridge  Tusheti, between the Tushetis Alazani and Pirikita Alazani Rivers (Andy Koysu River Basin), a little north-west from the place of their confluence, in the Tusheti National Park, 8 km from the Russian border Dagestan. Administratively, this is part of Akhmeta district in Kakheti, region of Tusheti, Georgia. Consisting of lower and upper parts, Omalo is the main gate for exploring the valleys of Tusheti. In fact, it is the central village of the region, the first point when traveling from Kakheti to the top. Due to the high location of Omalo on the northern slopes of the mountain range of the Greater Caucasus and the lack of well-groomed roads, it is largely isolated from the rest of Georgia for most of the year. The only access road passes through the Abano Pass at an altitude of 2850 meters. Keselo fortress is a landmark Zemo (upper part) Omalo, located on a high cliff. This place served as a haven for locals in wartime. Inside the complex is a small ethnographic museum. Approaching the village, wide open meadows dominate, often covered with wildflowers in June.
