Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti

Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti is in the northwestern part of Georgia and is considered one of the most beautiful regions. It comprises two ancient historical/geographical areas – Samegrelo and Zemo Svaneti, whose centers are, Zugdidi and the town of Mestia, respectively.   1. Martvili Canyon - Natural Monument is 700 m long stone paved circular route starts from canyon visitor center and crosses the Dadiani (Georgian nobles, Dadiani family) historical trail. There are 2 bridges, 3 platform views and historical 30 steps stair constructed by large limestone boulders. Visitors can enjoy 300 meter boat tour on river Abasha and beautiful views of mountain river canyon.
  2. Kolkheti National Park - astonishing lakeshore scenery, impassable tall thickets of bulrush, secondary wet meadows and the thick cover of royal fern.
  3. Upper Svaneti (UNESCO Heritage Site) - Preserved by its long isolation, is an exceptional example of mountain scenery with medieval-type villages and tower-houses. The village of Chazhashi still has more than 200 of these very unusual houses, which were used both as dwellings and as defence posts against the invaders who plagued the region.
  4. Zugdidi -  at an elevation of 100–110 metres above sea level. Zugdidi is the capital of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region, which combines Samegrelo  and upper part of Svaneti, and the center of the Zugdidi Municipality within.
  5. Mestia - Historically and ethnographically, Mestia has always been regarded a chief community of Upper Svaneti province. The population is mostly Svans, a cultural and linguistic subgroup of the Georgians.
  6. Usguli - is a community of four villages located at the head of the Enguri gorge in Svaneti, Georgia. Recognized as the Upper Svaneti UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ushguli is one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe.
